All I Want for Christmas…

I’m finally at the stage of my life where there isn’t a lot I need or want. While I won’t be joining the Black Friday masses this week, there is one thing I covet with all of my heart. It’s this beautiful 6 3/4 quart Le Creuset dutch oven. It’s cast iron covered in enamel and is perfect for roasting and braising meats and vegetables.  I’m already imagining the braised short ribs and roasted chickens I will cook for the holidays and beyond. Le Creuset cookware doesn’t come cheap though. I nearly fainted when I saw the $300.00 list price of this beauty.  That said, a piece of Le Creuset cookware will last you a lifetime. Yes, I could probably find a cheaper knockoff but I’m holding out for the real thing. What do you think? Am I crazy for lusting after this?

Oh I love the Tiffany Blue and no you are not crazy for lusting after this. I justify big purchases by thinking of all the other ways that I would save by having something really nice that will last longer than many cheap things. Just think of all the money you would save by cooking at home. Plus, with healthy home cooked meals you would save potential costs from medical bills, as you would be healthier.

In todays economic climate, it is a fine balance between needs and wants. I have found myself scrimping on many goodies and beautiful things. For over six months I have been lusting after a $600 handbag. I couldn’t stand it anymore and ordered the bag, but when the UPS man arrived with the box, I had major guilt and refused to accept it, sending it back to Handbag heaven. I still lust after it, although it is now sold out. But reality is, I would not have the time or place to use said handbag.
Perhaps one day, if it’s meant to be the bag will find its way back to me. I can also still hold out and dream about a $6000 bag.

Leena – so true about balancing wants and needs. If I’m honest with myself there is very little I need but lots of things I want! Oh, how I can relate to your handbag lust. A couple of years ago there was a Coach satchel that had my name on it. I was dying to buy it. It was right around $600 and even though I could afford it at the time (pre-baby, natch) I just couldn’t pull the trigger. But you know, when you think about it if you buy something of quality, even if it costs a bit more if it really does pay for itself over the long run. Still, let’s be honest, sometimes we just need to treat ourselves and damn the cost!

Buy it and do not feel guilty! We as mothers put everyone and everything first and we forget that we need to indulge every now and then. Its not an extravagant request and it still benefits your family. Every now and then we have to do things that make us smile. Don’t forget if you take care of yourself, you will be in much better frame of mind to take care of your family. Go get the darn thing!!!!
